How to Mute All Videos on Any Page

What is Video Volume?

Video volume sets the volume of every video on the page at the same time. One slider, from 0% to 100%.

At 0% every video is silent. At 50% they all play at half volume. At 100% they play normally.

It saves you hunting for each player's own volume control, which every website hides in a different place.

Who is This For?

This is helpful for:

• Anyone who finds sudden loud sound painful or startling
• People with sensory sensitivity, including autistic people and people with misophonia
• Anyone reading in a quiet room, a library or a classroom
• Anyone on a page with several videos that all want to be heard at once

Step 1: Open Helperbird

Click the Helperbird icon in your browser toolbar, then open All Features at the bottom of the menu.

Step 2: Open Media Controls

Find Media controls in the list and open it.

The panel holds two controls: Playback speed and Video volume.

Step 3: Turn on Video Volume

Switch Video volume on. The slider appears underneath it.

Step 4: Slide to 0% to Mute

Drag the slider all the way to the left, to 0%. Every video on the page goes silent.

You can use the minus and plus buttons on either side instead of dragging, which is easier if a pointer is hard to control.

Any level between works too. 30% is often enough to keep a video listenable without it dominating the room.

Turning It Off Again

Switch Video volume off.

Helperbird remembers what volume each video had before it changed anything, and puts each one back. If you adjusted a video yourself using the site's own controls while Helperbird was on, your choice is kept.

What It Does Not Do

Two things to know before you rely on this:

• It works on videos, not on separate audio players. If a page plays sound through an audio player rather than a video, this will not silence it.
• It sets the volume. It does not stop the video playing. The video still runs. At 0% it makes no sound.

If a page keeps playing something you cannot silence, Reading Mode strips the page back to its text instead.
