How it works
Crowding
When letters sit tightly together they start to interfere with each other — researchers call it crowding. For many readers with dyslexia the effect is stronger: letters inside a word blur into one shape, and words lean into their neighbors. A screen lets you push everything apart. Keeping your place
Reading is also navigation. Your eyes finish a line, sweep back, and have to land on the start of the next one — and on a dense page that small jump fails often, so you reread the line you finished or skip one entirely. The decoding load
Dyslexia itself is about decoding — mapping letters to sounds takes more effort, and that effort is the bottleneck. Here is the thing: crowded letters and lost lines spend from the same energy budget. Screen tools cannot decode a word for you, but they can lower the mechanical costs of the page, so more of your attention reaches what the words mean. And when decoding is the wrong tool for the day, a screen can read the text aloud — an option paper has never offered.
Where it came from
In 1896 a doctor named W. Pringle Morgan described a bright teenager who could not learn to read, and called the condition "congenital word blindness." The name tells you what that era believed: that reading trouble lived in the eyes. In the 1920s Samuel Orton studied it closely, and over the decades that followed the understanding moved — away from vision, toward language.
Today's picture: dyslexia is a common, lifelong, neurobiological difference in how the brain processes written language — primarily phonological, the mapping between letters and the sounds they stand for. It is not a vision problem, and it has nothing to do with intelligence. A figure often cited is around one person in ten, though estimates vary with how the line is drawn.
For nearly all of that history there was one place to read: paper, and paper is fixed. Whatever font, size, and spacing the printer chose is what every reader got, forever. Screens changed the deal. For the first time the reader controls the text — the font, the size, the spacing, the colors — and can listen instead of decoding at all. Who it helps — honestly
Start with what these tools are not: treatment. Changing a font or widening the spacing does not change how a brain maps letters to sounds. The evidence-based intervention for dyslexia is structured literacy teaching, and no browser setting substitutes for it. If a product tells you otherwise, close the tab.
What screen tools change is the working conditions — and working conditions are not nothing. A less crowded page, a line you cannot lose, text you can listen to when your eyes are done: readers find this buys comfort and stamina, which in practice means more reading.
