Is Assistive Technology Cheating?

If you hand out assistive technology in a school, you will meet this eventually. A teacher, usually a good one, says some version of:

"Isn't that cheating? They're not really learning if the computer does it for them."

It is worth taking seriously, because the person saying it is not being unkind. They are protecting something — the belief that the work should be the student's own. That instinct is right. It is being aimed at the wrong thing.

This post is the general answer. Three more go into the specific objections we hear most: voice typing and learning to write, AI summaries and doing the thinking, and text to speech and learning to read.

One question settles most of it

Before you argue about the tool, ask about the task:

What is this assignment actually measuring?

That is the whole thing. Everything else follows from it.

If a history essay is measuring whether a student understands the causes of a war, then spelling is not what is being measured. A tool that fixes spelling has not touched the thing you are grading.

If a spelling test is measuring spelling, then a spellchecker has replaced the task. That is not an accommodation. That is a different assignment.

The same tool can be either, depending on the lesson. Nobody needs a policy on spellcheck. They need a clear answer to what is being assessed today.

This is not a soft framing. It is the principle behind accommodation law: an assessment should measure the skill or knowledge it intends to measure, rather than the impact of a disability unrelated to that purpose.

Access is not the same as advantage

The strongest version of the worry is that assistive technology gives some students a leg up others do not get.

But an accommodation is designed to promote access, not success. It removes a barrier that sits between a student and the work. It does not do the work, and it does not guarantee a good grade. A student with text to speech can still misunderstand the passage. A student with voice typing can still write a weak argument.

If a tool genuinely made the work easy, every student would want it, and the honest response would be to give it to everyone. That is more or less what Universal Design for Learning argues, and in practice it is what happens: the spellchecker stopped being an accommodation and became a word processor feature.

The analogy that does the work

When a teacher is stuck on this, the Braille comparison usually lands:

Nobody has ever called Braille cheating. Nobody has ever said a Deaf student using an interpreter did not really do the assignment.

The format changed. The work did not.

We accept this instantly when the disability is visible. It gets harder when the disability is invisible, and harder still when the tool looks like something any student might want. But the logic does not change based on whether you can see the barrier.

Equality and fairness are not the same thing

A lot of the pushback comes from a genuine commitment to treating students the same.

Giving every student precisely the same thing feels fair. It is the instinct most of us were trained into. But identical treatment is only fair when students start from the same place, and in a real classroom they do not.

The question worth asking a colleague is not "why does she get that?" It is: "what is she able to show me now that she could not show me before?" If the answer is "her actual understanding of the topic", the tool is doing its job.

What the research actually says

The evidence is genuinely supportive. Studies of speech-to-text find students produce longer writing with fewer mechanical errors. Studies of text to speech find improved comprehension for students with reading difficulties, and reduced cognitive effort even where comprehension scores stay level.

It is also not uniform, and admitting that is what makes the rest credible. Effects vary by student, by tool and by how the tool was introduced, so anyone telling you assistive technology always works is overselling it. The honest claim is narrower and considerably stronger: for the students it fits, it removes a barrier that was stopping them showing what they already know.

What this looks like: one department, one term

The clearest way to settle this is usually not an argument. It is a term of watching what happens.

A Year 9 English department turns Helperbird on for everyone rather than for a named list of students. That decision is the whole experiment, and three things tend to follow.

Teachers stop policing and start assigning. Once the tools are ambient, the question changes from "is she allowed this?" to "what am I assessing today?" — which is the question that was worth asking all along. Mechanics lesson: tools off, and say so. Ideas lesson: use whatever gets the ideas out.

There is a cost to getting this wrong, and it is not academic.

Students know when a tool is treated as suspicious. A student who has to justify using text to speech, in front of a class, will often stop using it — not because it was not helping, but because the social price got too high. The accommodation is still on the paperwork. It has quietly stopped being used.

That is the failure mode worth guarding against. Not students getting an unearned advantage. Students abandoning support they need in order to look like everyone else.

Talking points to share with a team

Lift these directly if it helps.

  • "What is this task measuring?" If the tool does not touch the thing being assessed, it is not cheating.
  • Access, not advantage. Accommodations remove barriers. They do not do the work or guarantee the grade.
  • Nobody calls Braille cheating. The format changed, the work did not.
  • Same is not fair. Identical treatment is only fair from identical starting points.
  • If it were really that easy, every student would want it — and then we should give it to everyone.
  • Watch for the quiet opt-out. A student who stops using a tool to avoid standing out has lost twice.
