Does Text to Speech Stop Students Learning to Read?

The third objection, and the one with the most research behind the answer:
"If it reads to her, she is not working on her reading."
Like the others, it contains something true. It applies to a narrower slice of reading than the person saying it usually means.

Reading is decoding plus comprehension
Reading research splits reading into two strands that develop separately:
- Decoding — turning marks on a page into words. Phonics, blending, recognising words on sight.
- Comprehension — understanding what those words mean together. Vocabulary, inference, background knowledge, following an argument.
You need both. But they are not the same skill, they are taught differently, and a student can be strong at one and weak at the other.
That is the whole situation with dyslexia. Decoding is effortful and slow. Comprehension is frequently fine or excellent — sometimes well above grade level. The student can understand a text far more complex than the one they can decode.
Text to speech bypasses decoding. It leaves comprehension completely intact.
A student listening to a chapter still has to hold the argument in their head, follow the sequence, infer what is not stated, connect it to what they already know. Every part of comprehension is still being exercised. Nothing has been done for them except the part they were already spending all their effort on.
What the evidence shows
Research on text to speech with students who have reading difficulties finds:
- Improved comprehension for many students with reading and language difficulties.
- Reduced reading time and reduced cognitive effort, while comprehension holds at least level with silent reading.
- The largest benefits for students with the weakest decoding, which is what you would expect if the mechanism is bypassing decoding.
That second finding is worth sitting with. Even where comprehension scores do not rise, students get to the same understanding for less effort. For a student who arrives at period five already exhausted from reading, that is not a small result. Stamina is a real constraint on a school day.
The evidence is not uniform, and saying so makes the case stronger. Some studies find clear comprehension gains, others find the benefit is mainly in effort and speed, and results vary by the type of reading difficulty. Anyone claiming text to speech always raises comprehension is going beyond the research.

What this looks like: Josh, Year 8 science
Josh reads at roughly two years below his year group. His science comprehension is fine — ask him about photosynthesis and he will explain it. Getting through the chapter is the problem, and by the time he has decoded it he has nothing left for the questions at the end.
His lesson with Helperbird:

Josh did the same science lesson as everyone else. What changed is that he arrived at the questions with something left in the tank.
Step 5 is the one worth flagging to a SENCO or AT team. Scanned worksheets and photographed textbook pages defeat most reading tools completely, and they are everywhere in schools. A reader that cannot handle them leaves a gap the student falls into every week.
The word-highlighting detail matters
One thing worth knowing, because it changes how you set the tool up.
Text to speech that highlights each word as it speaks is not the same as an audiobook. The student sees the word and hears it at the same moment, repeatedly, across everything they read.
That is a pairing of print and sound — which is, structurally, what a lot of decoding instruction is trying to build. It is not a replacement for phonics teaching and nobody should claim it is. But "listening instead of reading" is not an accurate description of what is happening on screen when the words are lit up in front of the student as they go.

What it does not do
It does not teach decoding. If a student has a decoding goal, they need explicit, structured instruction to meet it — text to speech is not that and will never become that. Nor should it replace decoding practice. Both things belong in the same week: structured decoding work in its own session, and text to speech for the science chapter so that science does not stop while reading catches up.
That second point is the one that resolves most of this argument. The choice is not "learn to read" or "use text to speech". A student who cannot yet decode a grade-level text still has to learn science, history and geography, and those subjects do not pause. Text to speech is how they keep learning everything else while decoding instruction continues.
Blocking it does not produce more decoding practice. It produces a student falling behind in science.
The bit teachers often have not considered
Ask a sceptical colleague how they get through professional reading.
Podcasts on the commute. A document read aloud while driving. Skimming an abstract before deciding whether to read the paper. Listening to an article at 1.5x.
Adults use these constantly and do not consider themselves to be not reading. Amy Hatto, the occupational therapist whose question prompted this series, put it exactly this way: adults use assistive technology resources all the time, and then have a hard time with children using them.
That is worth naming gently in a staff meeting. Not as a gotcha — as a genuine prompt to notice the double standard.

- Comprehension is usually what you are teaching in a content lesson. It is untouched.
