Helperbird Never Gives Students the Answer

An occupational therapist working in a school district sent us this. It is the clearest statement of the problem we have had:
"I'm concerned they may be thinking this is 'cheating.' Are they not learning to write because they are using voice typing? Or is AI just doing it for them (summarizing feature)? Are they not working on reading skills if they are using immersive reader? I absolutely know it is needed and adults use these AT resources all the time. They often have a hard time with kid using them."
That last sentence is the one that matters. Adults use these resources all the time. They often have a hard time with kids using them.
Here is the short answer to all three questions, and then the thing underneath them.
The three quick answers
Voice typing. Writing is two jobs at once — working out what to say, and getting it onto the page. Voice typing removes the second and leaves the first completely intact. Studies of speech-to-text with students who have learning disabilities find dictated work is longer, has fewer mechanical errors, and is rated higher in quality. If it were a shortcut, quality would not go up. The longer answer.
Immersive Reader. Reading is decoding plus comprehension. Immersive Reader and text to speech bypass decoding and leave comprehension untouched — and comprehension is what a science or history lesson is actually teaching. A student following word-by-word highlighting is looking at the words. The longer answer.
Summarizing. This is the one where the worry is sometimes right, and we say so. The test is whether the tool removes a barrier to the work or removes the work. The longer answer.
But there is something the three questions share, and naming it settles more than answering them one at a time.
The real fear is not the tool. It is the chatbot.
When a teacher says "the computer is doing it for them", they are almost never picturing a reading ruler. They are picturing a student pasting an essay question into a chatbot and handing back what comes out.
That fear is completely reasonable. It is also about an entirely different piece of software.
So here is the line, and it is a hard one:
Every AI feature in Helperbird points at the source material the student is already looking at. None of them point at the question they have been asked.

Read down the middle column. Every single one is the student's own words, or a document their teacher gave them.
Nothing in that list has any idea what the assignment is. Ask Helperbird to summarise a chapter and it summarises the chapter. It does not know there is an essay question, cannot see it, and would not answer it if it could. There is no box to type "write my essay on the Industrial Revolution" into, because that is not what any of these tools are.
Why that distinction is worth defending
A teacher who has been burned by chatbot essays is right to be suspicious of anything with "AI" attached to it. The useful move is not to argue that all AI is fine, because that argument loses the room. It is to show where the line falls.
Changing the format of a source is access. Reading a chapter aloud, laying it out for easier reading, pulling text out of a scanned worksheet, translating it, defining a word — none of these change what the student has to understand, only whether the student can get at it. Generating new content that answers the task is a different thing entirely, and that is what deserves rules. Being precise about the difference is how those rules land on the right software instead of on a reading ruler.

What this looks like: Daniel, Year 11 mock exam paper
Daniel has dyslexia. His mock paper is a scanned PDF of a past paper, which is the format that defeats most reading support outright — it is an image, so there is no text to read aloud.
1. He gets the text out. Screenshot Reader pulls the text out of the scan, picking up the equations alongside the prose automatically.
2. He has the question read to him. Text to speech reads the question aloud, with word highlighting, twice. He is now on level terms with every other student in the room, which he was not two minutes ago.
3. He checks one word. "Infer" — dictionary. He knows the concept; he did not know that word meant that.
4. He answers it himself. Voice typing turns what he says into text. Helperbird has typed his sentences. It has not supplied one.
5. He proofreads by ear. Text to speech reads his own answer back, and he catches a misheard word that spellcheck would never flag.
At no point did Helperbird know what the question was asking or have any view about the right answer. It read him the paper and wrote down what he said.
That is the whole thing. If Daniel does not know the answer, he gets it wrong — exactly like everyone else in the room. What changed is that he is now being assessed on whether he understands the subject, rather than on whether he can decode a photocopy under time pressure.
The part about adapting to the future
The therapist's last sentence deserves a section of its own.
Adults use these AT resources all the time. They often have a hard time with kids using them.
Think about how the adults in that staffroom actually work. Dictating messages while driving. Listening to documents and podcasts on a commute. Asking a device to read something aloud while cooking. Skimming an abstract to decide whether to read the paper. Autocomplete, spellcheck and predictive text on every device they own.
None of them think they have stopped reading or writing. They have adopted the tools that make reading and writing work in a busy life.
The students in front of them will enter workplaces where dictation is standard, where documents are routinely read aloud, and where the ability to use these tools well is an ordinary professional skill. A student who leaves school fluent in assistive technology has an advantage. A student who was told it was cheating has to learn it later, on their own, with no one teaching them how to do it properly.
That is the cost of getting this wrong. Not an unearned grade. A student who needed a tool, was made to feel dishonest for using it, and quietly stopped — and then had to rediscover it at twenty-two, in a job, with nobody showing them how.
Spellcheck was controversial once. So were calculators. Both are now so ordinary that nobody can remember the argument. These tools are on the same path, and schools get to decide whether they are ahead of it or behind it.
Talking points to share with a team
- Helperbird never sees the assignment. Every tool acts on the source or on the student's own words.
- There is no "write my essay" box. Structurally, these tools cannot answer a question they cannot see.
- The chatbot fear is legitimate — and it is about different software. Be precise so the rules land in the right place.
- Changing the format of a source is access. Generating content that answers the task is not. Helperbird is entirely on the first side.
- If the student does not know it, they still get it wrong. The tool does not rescue them.
- We all already work this way. Dictation, listening, autocomplete, skimming.
- Fluency in these tools is a workplace skill. Banning it does not delay the skill, it removes the teaching.
